KidsPeace New England to begin assessing child abuse, neglect cases

A $598,000 award will allow the South Portland office to begin operating the Alternative Response Program in January

S. PORTLAND – KidsPeace New England has been awarded nearly $600,000 to offer a new service that involves the investigation and assessment of child abuse and neglect cases.

The Alterative Response Program, which covers all of Cumberland County, is a four-month service to delve into abuse and neglect cases called into DHHS that are designated low-risk. These are cases that are deemed likely to need service, but pose no imminent threat of harm to the child. But as part of this service modality, if a case is determined to pose a higher risk for violence, it will be referred back to DHHS.

KidsPeace received $598,000 to offer the program for 18 months, with service slated to begin Jan. 1. We are excited to be in a position to continue to offer new, necessary services to the community.
